Market Your Music

There are a number ways to market yourself online and off. This is very important to do because you can be the best act in the world but if no one hears you then what does it matter. In my early years as a musician I didn’t market nor promote myself much at all. I figured that since my group was so great, the labels and fans would be on a hunt for me. Well that wasn’t the case. I did play many shows and had a buzz about my group which attracted some attention but it wasn’t enough to put us over the top. These days you can do much of the promotion yourself and generate a huge fan base that will have the record labels looking to sign you. You may also want to turn down the label offers and continue doing the “business” work yourself as I have seen done time and time again. The point is if a record label is looking to give you an offer, then you must be doing something right. The right thing you are doing is “getting out there” meaning your music/merchandise is available and everyone seems to want it. This is done by marketing yourself successfully.

We all know that to compete in any market these days you must have a presence online. Nothing can be more true for the band or solo artist that is trying to make a name for themselves. For starters make sure you have a website and/or a page with a social networking site dedicated to your music act. Spend some time everyday promoting your site. Get involved with the music community by posting in forums. Answer some music related questions at Q/A sites and on forums. Make sure to keep up to date posts and blogs on your site and link back to it when you are interacting in the music community online.

Play as many gigs as you can. Get stickers made of your acts name and logo. Get the t-shirts done. Have your c/d’s packaged up professionally even if you only have three songs on the disc. Bring all of your merchandise to every show you play. Give some stuff away but also set a reasonable price for your music/merch. and sell it. Post flyer’s up in the area of the venue, that advertise your show.

Above are just some examples of how to market your music act. There are many more techniques and strategies that you can use. You are only limited by your creativity. There is always going to be new and effective ways to market your act.
