The listener should have at least a rudimentary knowledge of classical musical construction from the simplest ballad to the most complex symphony. Having this knowledge it will be possible to receive undisturbed the impressions music has to give, and to distinguish the trivial and commonplace from the noble and beautiful. Classical music is far beyond words, and in attempting to translate it into these we miss its musical meaning, the best that is in it.

Even a well-cultivated ear and taste may often be baffled by the intricacies of a fugue, symphony or other great work of musical art heard for the first time.

The best listener beyond the pale of genius will at times feel as one astray in a labyrinth of beauty to which for the moment no clue appears.

A single representation will rarely suffice to reveal the

full worth of a masterpiece of classical music. By hearing it often, by admitting it, or some reproduction of it, to our own fireside, we will become familiar with its contents and learn truly to know it.

The oftener good classical music is heard the more completely it will be appreciated. Therefore, they listen best to music who hear the best continually. The assertion is often heard that a person must be educated up to an enjoyment of high class music. Certainly, one who has heard nothing else must be educated down to an enjoyment of ragtime, with its crude rhythms.

Beyond knowledge comes the intuitive feeling which is enriched by knowledge. Through it we may feel the breath of life, the spiritual appeal, which belongs to every great work of art and which must forever remain inexplicable.

Many are content to listen to classical music for the mere sensuous impression it creates as it wraps itself about the inner being, lulling a perturbed spirit to rest, or awakening longing and aspiration, joy and sadness, according to the nature of the music and the hearer’s mood. Some even take pleasure in formulating into words the sensations evoked by the ebb and flow of the tonal waves, and fancy they are thus deriving

intellectual profit from music.

The idea so largely accepted that classical music is an unfathomable mystery, like all half truths has wrought much mischief, and has greatly retarded musical progress in social life. Behind the Divine Art, as behind

Religion, lies the inscrutable mystery of Life, and in both there is a

Holy of Holies only the consecrated may enter. Before the portals of

this are reached there is a broad, fertile field for intellectual

activity that all may work to advantage, preparing the way to the inner

sanctuary.

Music and how we listen to it

Music has played a part in most of our lives. Way back in history music was an ever present entertainment. Through the centuries, music has always played a large part.

In the late 19th Century gramophones were invented but were only available to the upper classes.

The way we listen to music has changed beyond our wildest dreams. In the early 20th century if you wanted to listen to music you would go to a music hall for entertainment. If you wanted to listen to music at home you would gather around the piano. Most well to do homes had their own piano and the ladies would play for the gentlemen. Lower down the class system you would go to the local Inn or public house for some noisy entertainment!

In the late 1920’s we saw the advent of wireless and broadcasting. This brought news and music to many homes over the next twenty or so years. During World War II the wireless played a large part in many homes bringing news and rousing songs.

With the 1950’s music changed, the war was over and a new freedom dawned. Rock and Roll was here and it was here to stay! Vinyl records became even more popular and the old 78’s were replaced with 45’s and 33’s. By the 1960’s there was a musical revolution in full swing and with it an even greater desire to listen to music. Young people took the rock and roll and popular music to be there own. They would go to coffee bars to listen to music on juke boxes and tune in to pirate radio stations on their transistors. Transistor radios would often have an earpiece so you could listen on your own and without others hearing, this was the start of personal audio.

During the 1970’s you could listen to your music on cassette tape players and so the idea of personal music players really started to take hold. You could choose your own music as well as the radio. There was a down side to this. The music quality on a cassette tape would deteriorate with use and would often slip or get chewed up in the machine.

In the 1980’s compact discs became popular. They were better than the old vinyl records because they didn’t warp and they were easy to store. Because they were much smaller they became portable. The Sony Walkman was born and now we could listen to our music on our own Personal CD Player. In recent history this is probably the one thing that really changed the way we listen to music. Of course things have progressed further with MP3 players taking the limelight from the Walkman but the personal CD player was the iconic device that started the whole idea of personal audio as we know it today.

10 Ways to Listen to Music (and which one is the Best)

There are at least 10 ways you can listen to music and I will describe each of these, their pros and cons, and which is my favorite. Before i begin let me just say that I love to listen to music whether its while exercising, working, driving, or just relaxing on the back deck on a lazy Sunday afternoon.

Home Stereo System. You can put on a John Coltrane album and sit by the fireplace with your honey and enjoy the magic. The flexibility of the home stereo system is that you can play your music from several formats including record albums, cassette tapes, 8-track tapes, cd’s, reel-to-reel players and others. The pros of the home stereo system are that the sound is probably the best you will get from any source and you probably already have a large collection of albums and cds already. The cons of the home stereo system are that you can’t easily take your system with you and you also can’t easily take your music collection with you. In addition the home stereo system is probably the most expensive way to listen to music.

Car Stereo. Your car probably has one of the most convenient ways to listen to music and most manufacturers design their systems to be acoustically compatible with the car their in. In other words, rather than just adding a standard radio the manufacturers design the sound system with the acoustical elements of the car itself in mind. Car stereos are getting better and better all the time. The pros of the car stereo system are that they are already installed and can play a variety of formats from cassettes, cd’s radio, etc. In addition, many people spend so much time in their cars commuting that they probably have invested a large amount of money in the format that best suits their system. Cons of the car stereo are that you can’t take it with you when you get to where you are going and it can be difficult and expensive to change your system if you want to upgrade or if there is a problem.

Sony Walkman type devices. Originally the Sony walkman was a portable radio with a cassette player that has evolved over the years to include other formats. Hardly anyone would carry around a portable cassette player anymore due to the vastly superior choices available today.

MP3 player. Around 1994 the mp3 format (a format of digital music that took up much less space than a cd formatted song) became available online. Since then there have been improvements in the players such that you can carry around virtually all of your music collection in one device. The pros of these are portability and compactness. The cons are that the mp3 format is of a lesser quality that the original cd digital format and you can easily break or lose your mp3 player.

iPod. The Apple iPod, while technically an mp3 player, is by far the best available on the market bar none. The iPod is integrated perfectly with the iTunes web site and the uses a much better “lossless” ALAC codec for their music. Sleek in design and way cool the iPod is the mp3 player of choice. I’ll be writing several article on the iPod alone. The pros of the iPod are that it is the world-class leader of mp3 players and the music quality is much better than mp3′s (although it can also play regular mp3′) and it can also play videos (later models). The cons of the iPod are that it is expensive and difficult to repair if something goes wrong. It is also highly desired by thieves so you must be careful with your iPod.

Satellite Radio. I have both XM and Sirius satellite radios, one for each car. There are differences between the two which I will write about in a different article. I believe that these two companies will probably merge one day. Satellite radios can be listened to in the car, at home, or on the go, depending on the model you have. Many now feature tivo-like abilities to pause, rewind and fast forward music. The pros are that you get more commercial-free music than you can handle. The cons are that you have to pay .95 per month for the service and if you can’t decide between the two you may end up with both!

Computer. Yes you can listen to music at you computer. Most computers these days come with decent speakers and since you can store virtually unlimited number of songs on your hard drive you can keep your entire collection in one place. You could listen to mp3′s, cd’s and dvd’s on your PC as well as download music. The pros are that you can keep all your music conveniently in one place and listen while you work. The cons are that a PC is a very expensive radio.

Streaming Music. Many people don’t realize but you can listen to the radio from stations all over the world by going online and streaming the music. iTunes and Windows media player both provide this interface as well as yahoo.com, all for free. Whatever your taste in music you can find from an online streaming site. You can even get programs that will record the music into mp3 format for listening later. The pros are that you can listen to virtually any kind of music for free. The con is you generally have to listen from your computer.

Satellite and Cable Systems. Whether you have Dish, DirectTV or cable at you house, most packages include about 30 music format for listening to and they are all commercial-free. Pros include commercial-free digital quality music. Cons are that you have to pay for all of these and you generally listen over your TV (although you could modify this)

Live Music. One of the most enjoyable ways to listen to music is to attend a concert of your favorite artist. Depending on the venue the sound can be anywhere from poor to fantastic. It is always fun, though, to hear the music being performed live. Pros: an experience that cannot be duplicated. Cons: can be very expensive and you have just the memory when its over.

That concludes the list of 10 ways to listen to music. By the way, my favorite is a portable XM satellite radio that lets you pause and rewind the songs and lets you store your own music on a memory card.

Once you log in, you will have a few different options to choose from including two types of friends to add; free and VIP.

These websites easily would allow you to add hundreds if not thousands of people every single day. And if you add more friends/receive more requests than anyone else, you will be put on the front page as a special member. I should also mention that points collected are potential friends, for example if you get 100 points that would be 100 potential friends. Also, the more points you have, the higher your priority is to receive friend requests! So someone with 5,000 points would receive friends faster than someone with say, 100 points! VIPs get this option too but VIPs and regular members are in two different area, and for good reason. VIPs actually pay for their membership and receive special benefits the free users don’t get. In this instance, it pays to become a VIP member!

This is an incredible way to market almost anything you would want to from art, photography, music, businesses, contests, products and so much more. Really I can’t see any reason why you wouldn’t want to get involved with something like this and start participating right this very second! Just think you could be set up in just a few minutes, sending and receiving friend requests that could just as well add up to the thousands, and this would take less than 30 minutes. Or you could do it by hand, sit there all day long, hours upon hours adding and accepting friends. By the way the programs you can use also have an automated friend adder option which allows you to turn on the program, get on your account through the program browser and accept all friend invites by bulk! Really what seems like the better choice to you?!? Go get em tiger!
